Housing as a Human Right!

The rally for Housing as a Human Right is taking place on Friday, November 22nd from 12 – 1 pm at Yonge and Dundas Square in Toronto. This event is part of the Pan-Canadian Week of Action for Housing. Beginning on National Housing Day, Friday, November 22nd, thousands of people across Canada will raise their voices in support of Housing as a Human Right!

We all have a part to play in ending homelessness – we are working in our communities everyday to support human rights and the creation of social housing but more action is needed by the federal government as well as provincial, territorial and municipal governments. Every year, 200,000 people are absolutely homeless in Canada, and millions more are inadequately housed. Aboriginal people, women, people with disabilities, racialized community members, seniors, youth, newcomers and others face high rates of homelessness and housing inadequacy. To end this crisis, on November 22nd we demand that immediate action be taken! So join us at Yonge and Dundas Square on Friday, November 22nd at 12 pm in solidarity for housing as a human right!

Stop Violence Against Homeless Women – Safe Space & Shelter for Women Now!

A rally and press conference will be held on Monday, November 25th at 11:30 am for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women at the corner of Dundas St. East and Sherbourne.

Too many women in our city are forced to sleep outside. Shelters are overcrowded and some nights women can’t even find a bed. On Sunday, September 22nd, 2013 a woman slept in a well-lit area near Dundas and Sherbourne. That night she was sexually assaulted two different times.

Despite having photos of the men responsible, the police have failed to hold a press conference or properly inform women in the community. The lack of attention and care towards this case of sexual violence reflects the stigma and discrimination faced by many women in our community. This reminds us of past injustices where women were put at risk by similar inaction, such as the disappearance of women from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

This incident, and many others, shows the true nature of the crisis within the shelter system and lack of safe space and housing for women in the City of Toronto. Women from the Community have been at the forefront of responding to this and demanding immediate action and accountability. Join us on November 25th as we speak out and demand new shelter space for women, a 24-hour low threshold drop-in center, and affordable, safe and supportive housing for all!
