Submissions for 2014 Summer Internships Now Open!

NEWS NOW is CHRY’s community news program with a critical perspective; live every Monday – Friday at 5-6pm broadcasting to the North Toronto region, the campus of York University and on the web. CHRY 105.5 FM is looking for critical and creative minds to join the only collective alternative news radio program in Toronto. We offer FREE broadcast skills training in: writing/voicing, interviewing, audio editing and sound design. As an alternative news outlet, News Now works as a team to collectively share skills and tasks among ourselves. We are committed to challenging ourselves and analyzing our stories individually and at our weekly story meetings using a consensus-based decision making model. This internship requires 8 hours/week and is unpaid, but can be recognized as course credit or community work if appropriate. Summer Internship Positions

Beat Director* – Keep up with the world of current events and share the latest story leads with the team at our weekly story meetings. Stories must uphold our mandate (anti-racist, anti-homophobic, anti-sexist) and challenge systems of oppression (The Three “I”s: Institutional, Interpersonal, Internalized). *The role of the Beat Director is a coordinator/internship position. See below for more info on how to apply to our internships. Check out the full role description for Beat Directors Producer* – Responsible for scheduling segment contributions, audio quality of recorded content, on-air presentation and sound design. Works closely in guiding and following up with Reporters and Beat Directors. *The role of the Producer is a coordinator/internship position. See below for more info on how to apply to our internships. Check out the full role description for Producers here. Social Media Coordinator* – Responsible for increasing News Now’s online visibility. Works closely with Reporters and Beat Directors to promote segments. *The role of the Social Media Coordinator is an internship position. Volunteer Roles:

Reporter – Conduct live or pre-recorded interviews based on the story leads from the Beat Directors or your own story pitch. News Now provides accreditation for press conferences and cultural festivals. Check out the full role description for Reporters here. Host – Guide listeners through the program by introducing the stories of the edition live in studio, based on the News Now script prepared prior to the live show. Technical Engineer – Control and monitor the audio levels and work the on-air engineering board to deliver smooth transitions and consistent volume levels.

Steps to getting involved:

#1 – Become an official volunteer at the CHRY General Orientation: If you have not already done so, contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Izabella at chryvol@yorku.ca or 416-736-2100 ext. 77265 about attending the next CHRY General Orientation. She will provide you the latest schedule of Orientation sessions. You will have to email her your resume and a statement of interest in volunteering at CHRY. #2 – News & Spoken Word Dept. Training: CHRY offers hands-on training on the foundational skills for producing high-quality content: scripting, voicing, audio editing, interviewing. The CHRY NSW Dept. offers trainings for free to volunteers who have completed the orientation sessions. Trainings are offered in a cycle every month. See the latest schedule below. While it is recommended to take them in order (1,2,3) it is not compulsory. For the latest schedule see our Training page. News Now Internships

News Now Coordinating Roles (Producers and Beat Directors) and Social Media Coordinator are internship positions, which we recruit for twice throughout the academic year. Application details are posted on this page at the beginning of every application period.

Internships require a commitment to 8 hours/week and are unpaid, but can be recognized as academic credit or community work if appropriate.
