People’s History Spotlight – 1969 Stonewall Riots

On June 27, 1969, during a routine police raid of the Stonewall Inn, a bar popular to members of New York’s gay and otherwise marginalized communities, police officers attempted to follow the standard procedure for such a raid: line up the patrons, check their identification, and have the female police officer accompany all individuals dressed as women to the bathroom to confirm their sex.  Any men dressed as women would be arrested. However, as patrons refused to comply, so began the 1969 Stonewall Riots…
